The amazing thing about Marc Jacobs is his rare talent combined with a passion and dedication to the industry. His energy is as breathtaking as his footwear designs are. Born in New York in April, 1963, Marc Jacobs has risen up to be among the most prominent fashion designers of modern times. Currently, he’s head designer for both the Marc Jacobs shoe line and the Marc by Marc Jacobs diffusion line. Moreover, Jacobs is the Creative Director of Louis Vuitton, a world-class prestigious French design house.
Jacobs graduated in 1981 from the High School of Art and Design at New York City. His parents were Jewish American and lived in Teaneck, New Jersey for most of his young life, a time when he started demonstrating a great mastery of arts. By the age of 15, Marc Jacobs started work at an avant-garde boutique selling clothing, Charivari, as a stockboy. He was later to join New York’s Parsons, the New School for Design. While at Parsons, his talent shone brightly and he knew he was in the right field when he won three consecutive awards in 1984, the Perry Ellis Gold Thimble Award, the Chester Weinberg Gold Thimble Award and the Design Student of the Year Award.
The future looked bright for the industrious and hardworking young man who would later win the hearts of women with the most incredible creations, especially the Marc Jacobs shoes. In fact, it was still when at Parsons, that Jacobs designed his first line, featuring hand-knit sweaters, a collection he later sold out. His first ever collection was designed for Reuben Thomas, Inc. licensed and sold under the Sketchbook label. It was at this time that he joined Perry Ellis where he launched himself squarely into the fashion industry. He was however dismissed in 1993, after which he co-founded the Jacobs Duffy Designs Inc. with Robert Duffy.
Jacobs was funded by Onward Kashiyama USA, Inc., in 1986 to design the inaugural collection of the Marc Jacobs label. The success of the label made Jacobs the youngest designer ever to be awarded the Perry Ellis Award for New Fashion Talent, by the Council of Fashion Designers of America in 1985. This is the world’s fashion industry highest tribute a designer can ever get. Jacobs’ talent had amazed many but more was to come. In 1989, Jacobs was to join Tristan Russo’s unit of women’s design as a Vice President. This earned him yet another great honor in 1992, the Women’s Designer of the Year Award by the Council of Fashion Designers of America.
From one level to the next, Jacobs rose up to until 1997 when he was appointed the Creative Director of Louis Vuitton. But the one reason why he has worn the hearts of women across the globe is when he tried out his talent in women footwear. Marc Jacobs shoe designs hit the roof in popularity, turning the Marc by Marc Jacobs label into an overnight family name.
